“Just being a gelding for the whole preparation, he’s just doing everything consistently better. He eats better, his work is more consistent, his moods are more consistent. That’s a pretty exciting win on a big day.”
Josh Parr returned to scale and let out a “whoop” under his breath like he had just won The Everest.
He had stalked the speed of Prime Candidate, gradually wore him down past the Royal Randwick rise and eased to a one-and-a-quarter length win from Standout ($11), who was runner-up in the Sydney Stakes for the second straight year. Prime Candidate ($26) clung on for third.
“I’m very proud,” Parr said. “I’m bursting with energy at the moment. It was a real thrill obviously, first day with the crowds back. The atmosphere – the difference. There are 10,000 people here, but it feels like 110,000.
“I feed of this type of atmosphere. Must say we’ve been fortunate to continue as a sport, but it has been difficult without the fans, the people here to cheer us on. We appreciate them all here today.”
Newnham said Big Parade would be aimed at the Classique Legend Stakes, where the horse will win a $1 million bonus if successful.

“He’s shown at his last couple of starts that he’s not just a leader, so I’m sure that will help him run a little bit further and a 1300 at Rosehill is a pretty soft 1300,” Newnham said. “I reckon there’s a good chance he’ll go there, and he’ll be very competitive.”
