Birth certificate error
A father discovered his son had been recorded as a female by the registrar of births when he applied for a copy of his son’s birth certificate for a prospective employer 16 years later. In 1922, when twin sons were born at Auburn, he had registered his sons’ births at the local registry but never received the birth certificates. He was shocked and embarrassed to find that the boy’s Christian name “Allan Roderick” had been recorded as “Ellen Roderick”.
Darwin a “hotel museum”
An American air traveller was once asked what he thought of Darwin. “Why Darwin is a hotel museum,” he replied. “You would certainly go in for discomfort here. Does any water ever come from the taps? I thought hotels like these went out with the Klondike gold rush days.” His plane had arrived on a bad day. It was during the “dry” season and the town supplies had run low. He had been unable to shave. The licensee had overlooked providing essential supplies such as water.
Fan dancer found guilty
A case that attracted nationwide attention ended when a jury found Sally Rand, a fan dancer, guilty of assaulting two admirers, who took candid photos of her while she was performing in a local theatre. Miss Rand confessed that she wanted bald men for jurors, but she got nine grey-haired women and three embarrassed men. She also wanted to demonstrate her art in court but the judge pointed out she was not charged with wearing a costume of talcum powder.
