They allege Denning was armed with a .45 calibre pistol but he did not produce it.
He was wearing a beige, shortsleeved shirt and brown trousers. He had grown a moustache since his escape, but otherwise there was no apparent attempt at disguise.
Woman in car arrested
A 22-year-old woman, a passenger in the car, was also arrested.
Denning and the woman were taken to Central CIB in Liverpool Street, city, for questioning. Denning was later driven back to the flat in Mona-Vale to watch police search it.
Later in the evening he was driven back to the CIB then to the Central Police Station, placed in the dock at the charge room and charged on two counts of armed robbery.

For the car trip, Denning was handcuffed to one detective. Two detectives sat on each side of him and there were two more in the front seat of the police car.
The first charge alleged that in December 1980, he held up Sydney Mechanical Services at Glebe and took $9,000.
The second alleged that in April this year, he held up the Summer Hill branch of the Bank of NSW and took $20,000.
He was also charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The woman was charged with harbouring a criminal and with having goods in custody, worth about $1,000, reasonably suspected of having been stolen.

Miss Kim Pascoe, a girlfriend of Denning, told the Herald last night that she thought he was “too clever” to ever be recaptured.
Miss Pascoe, 27, said she would make every effort to see Denning. “I will always stand by Ray, no matter what happens,” she said.
