Sydney Modern hits high point as construction continues

Richard Crookes Constructions was contracted as the builder of Sydney Modern in September 2019 for a tender price of $220 million.

The NSW Government is contributing $244 million in funding, with the Art Gallery raising more than $100 million from philanthropic and corporate donors to support the expansion.

The new stand-alone building lying to the north of the sandstone Art Gallery of NSW is designed by international Pritzker Prize-winning architects SANAA.

It features a public art garden, a series of cascading exhibition spaces and the adaptive reuse of a decommissioned World War II oil tank.

Mr Harwin predicted contemporary artists from around the world would queue up to have art installations in the oil tank.

Once finished it will effectively double the display space for the gallery’s collection.

The roof of the entrance pavilion will be covered in solar cells, helping the project achieve six-star Green Star design rating, Australia’s first museum to achieve the highest rating for sustainable design.

In all, 1400 tons of structural steel had been erected and 80000 tons of material excavated.

Work will now begin on installing internal walls, lifts, escalators, bridges and terrace canopies.

Next, the facade will be cladded and glazed.

Art Gallery of New South Wales director Dr Michael Brand said the indoor-outdoor campus would overlook Sydney Harbour, on Gadigal Country, and provide exceptional art experiences for visitors.

Mr Harwin said the project was expected to inject more than $1 billion into the NSW economy over 25 years and double the number of annual visits from 1 million to 2 million per year.
