A 16-year-old boy stabbed a man to death at a Scientology centre in Sydney’s north after becoming angry that his mother deleted a pornographic story from one of his electronic devices, a court has heard.
The boy, who cannot be named, had travelled to Australia with his mother in December 2018 to take classes at the Chatswood centre, however he disagreed with the teachings and after several days he began doing odd jobs on the grounds instead.

On January 1, 2019, an employee of the church told the boy’s mother that he had a novel containing pornographic and violent themes on his MP3 player, and suggested she should delete it because it was not good for him.
The next morning, while he was sleeping, the mother took his MP3 player from his bed at about 4am and deleted all files containing text.
Later that day, the mother attended classes as usual – which sometimes went to 10pm – and the boy did his usual odd jobs, until he walked into a class at about 8.15pm to confront her, demanding in Mandarin: “was it you who deleted my data”.
The mother denied it, however the son said he would give her 10 seconds to recover it and began to count backwards from 10.
“When he finished counting, the accused struck his mother on the head with a closed fist,” Justice Hament Dhanji said in a judgment on Tuesday, following a special hearing in the NSW Supreme Court.
The boy hit his mother several more times, kicked her, grabbed her by the throat, and attempted to pull a television on top of her. He was restrained by two staff members and his mother fled, staying with another student that night instead of returning home.
The next day, the boy returned to church grounds to seek help restoring the data on his MP3 player.
