A man is in hospital in a critical but stable condition after an assault in a Fremantle suburb left him with life-threatening injuries on Sunday night.

Frederick Bertram, 36, caught a bus from Spearwood to Hilton, on the outskirts of the City of Fremantle, about 10.30pm before he was involved in an altercation with another man on Snook Crescent about 10.50pm.

Detective Senior Constable Matthew Frankel said Mr Bertram underwent emergency surgery at Royal Perth Hospital for head injuries and was recovering on Monday.

Detectives were trying to piece together his movements on the night, but believe he got off the bus near Snook Crescent.

“We’re appealing for witnesses to come forward, and the male in question that was seen with the victim to come forward and hand himself in to police,” Senior Constable Frankel said.

Neighbour Steve Costen told Nine News Perth he heard a commotion and came out to find the 36-year-old musician lying on the road with his mother calling for help.

“The mother had said something about there was somebody else there and a bit of a scuffle, an argument,” Mr Costen said.

Senior Constable Frankel said there was nothing to suggest the two men were on the bus together before the assault, but Fremantle detectives were on Monday calling for dashcam and CCTV footage from households in the area.

Police would also like to speak to anyone who was on a bus travelling from Spearwood to Hilton between 10.20pm and 10.50pm.
