About 2000 cyclists use the bridge every day, making it one of Sydney’s busiest cycling routes.
The ramp will allow cyclists to avoid having to dismount and haul their bikes up and down a flight of 55 stairs.
Its introduction, first mooted in 2016, has been controversial among residents who fear it will detract from their views of the bridge, impinge on open space in nearby Bradfield Park and result in the felling of trees.
Transport for NSW’s executive director of integrated precincts, Anna Bradley, said those concerns had been considered, with the team focusing on producing a ramp that has a positive impact on the surrounding space.
The three designs feature striking differences in choice of materials, balustrades, handrailings and the connection to the roadway.

“Those concerns and those constraints don’t go away but as a project team that’s what we’re aspiring to, to deliver something that’s both functional but also beautiful, and it enhances this amazing space,” she said.
Member for North Shore Felicity Wilson said the process was about designing a piece of infrastructure worthy of sharing its iconic location with the Harbour Bridge.
Following the selection of the winning design, the community will have further opportunities to provide feedback as planning progresses.
