Sitting in their loungeroom in California, Bill and Nancy Elzig eagerly tuned into the West Australian Premier’s live press conference so they could learn firsthand when they would be able to see their only child David, who has been living in Perth for six years.
On Monday, Premier Mark McGowan announced that the state’s hard border to the world would come down after 673 days, and quarantine-free travel would recommence as of February 5, 2022.
David Elzig, who travelled with baseball to Perth but has now settled permanently, said the last time he saw his family was in 2018 for his grandfather’s funeral.
“My mum and dad were pretty excited when Marky Mark announced the borders would reopen on February 5,” he said.
“My fiancé Casey and I have been a planning a wedding, which we’ve had to cancel a few times.
“But now we’ve set a date for April 29 and we are sticking with it, no matter what.
“The border changes mean my parents can come out here without quarantining.”
But Mr Elzig said he did harbour some doubts over whether border rules could change again and throw their plans into turmoil.
