Needless to say, the show was incredible. Sans strides, I played like a bandit, syncopating my way from angular bossa-nova, to sinewy swing, then back to shanty waltz, even earning a reviewer’s comment about my “deathly drumming”. That’s a compliment, by the way. Without slacks holding me back, it seemed the sky was the limit. I don’t think my fellow troubadours shared my bare-legged optimism.
Not long after that I left the band. I may have cited musical differences, but deep down I suspected the real issue lay below the belt. Like my rail working brethren, I too demanded shorts. But the system held out. It was strides or bust.

As one who has fought and lost, I urge our state’s rail workers to hold out. They can take away Australian-built carriages. They can automate station announcements. They can even take Clyburn off the network. (What happened to that station?) But they can’t hold back the tide of knobbly knees demanding to be free.
