Under the pressure of such disciplined bowling in helpful conditions, England were let down by their muddled minds during the second session.
Root made a lovely half-century he once again failed to convert into a big score, playing his worst shot of the tour wafting at a ball from Mitchell Starc to be caught behind.
Ben Stokes (25) sliced a short ball straight to point and Jos Buttler (3) played the most unfathomable shot of the day, charging a Nathan Lyon off-break to be caught in the deep on the stroke of tea.
Bairstow (35) did have an excuse, gloving a snorter of a short ball from Starc to gully.
“We’ve got to get a bit stronger and tougher with our dismissals,” Bairstow conceded. “We know that, we’ve spoken about that. That’s being honest with ourselves.
“We saw that in the second innings in Adelaide that we batted for a period of time and put a lot [of value] on each of our wickets.

“When it comes around to the second innings here that’s exactly what we’re going to have to do.”
Bairstow claimed it was up to each player to decide how they played.
“It’s individuals going out and playing the way in which they foresee the best way.
“Naturally the execution wasn’t there today but the amount of times those shots are executed and go to the boundary is high.
“It’s one of those we will look back on and reassess next time and potentially take a different option.

“If that’s the game plan to take the off-spinner down and put pressure back on and potentially get another fielder back then that’s the game plan that was taken.
“It’s about finding a way of scoring runs individually. You look amongst techniques that have scored for many years over here [Australia] there’s not one method that works. There are many different methods.
“People have analysed techniques and game plans as to what’s the best way of scoring runs but at the end of the day it does come down to spending time out in the middle.”
