When the 35-year-old passenger could not be found, the search was suspended after an hour because of a lack of light and resumed on Christmas morning.
NSW Police Chief Inspector Joseph McNulty later said police were investigating the circumstances of the accident, before a report would be prepared for the coroner.
“I’ve been doing this job for 30 years and every person pulled out of the water wearing a life jacket has been alive,” he said.
“If you can’t swim, don’t go in. If you can’t operate a boat correctly, safely, operate it very slowly.”
