There was anticipation in the air on Thursday as fishmongers readied themselves for the next 36 hours, with Sydneysiders rushing in to pick up prawns, fish and mussels to complete their Christmas Day meals.

Sydney Fish Market Tour Guide and Customer Experience Co-ordinator Alex Stollzno said it was expected that close to 100 tonnes of produce would be traded by Friday evening.

The most popular choices so far had been prawns, salmon, kingfish and barramundi, but he added that ocean perch and sea urchin had also proven popular.

“This year has been pretty steady,” Mr Stollzno said on Thursday. “It’s hard to anticipate official numbers [of customers], but normally it would probably be tens of thousands.”

He added that the team were well-prepared for the surge in custom, with people working in shifts to cater to the demand, and staff were used to dealing with coronavirus regulations.

“We have had two Good Fridays and this is our second Christmas with COVID-19 restrictions, so we’re used to effective marshalling and handing out masks … it has become second nature.”

Sydney Fish Market’s annual 36-Hour Seafood Marathon runs until 5pm on Christmas Eve.

As Sydneysiders finalised their preparations, Rachel Colquhoun, from South West Rocks on the Mid North Coast, enjoyed the pre-Christmas atmosphere with her 11-year-old daughter Isabelle.
