But Australian Medical Association WA president Mark Duncan-Smith said the development of a proper system of GP involvement including home observation of patients as called for by the lobby had simply not occurred yet.

“The contract for the delivery … has only apparently just been awarded and the details released,” he said.

“GPs are in the dark as far as how it’s going to be run, what the clinical governance is, what equipment will be supplied, and exactly how it’s going to work.

“So it’s going to be a very busy time for the state government in the next four weeks to properly bring the GPs along for the ride and to create a system that is going to prevent the hospitals getting overrun.”

WAtoday understands hospital doctors are worried only a small fraction of GPs will continue doing face-to-face consultations after the borders open.

Opposition health spokeswoman Libby Mettam said more information needed to be rolled out about the at-home system.

“Our homes may be the true frontline when it comes to individuals managing COVID,” she said.

“There is a real need to get that information out there well ahead of February 5.”
