Kate Darby redeemed a couple of missed shots with Geelong’s second goal leaving Collingwood six points up at the main break.
The intensity was high in the third, and it was an arm wrestle against the defensive units. Both sides struggled to move the ball. Collingwood led disposals as Jaimee Lambert dominated with 11 contested possessions and 16 disposals. She handed off to Molloy to snap a goal from forward pressure to relieve a goalless third term.
The Magpies led by 11 at the final break but Geelong found reward for effort eventually, with a major from Darcy Moloney.
Molloy was the recipient of a 50-metre penalty, booting her second for the night. Geelong tried to respond, managing repeat entries, but couldn’t end Collingwood’s undefeated run.
Pride Round
Round three marks the league’s Pride Round, a celebration of diversity and inclusivity within the game and community, with both teams wearing special pride guernseys. General manager – Women’s Football, Nicole Livingstone, said recognising Pride Round as an official round in the competition provides the football community an opportunity to come together and celebrate the inclusivity of AFLW. “We are proud to showcase AFLW Pride Round and give back to the community through awareness and recognition,” Ms Livingstone said.
Faraway friends and AFL foes
Collingwood’s Sarah Rowe and the Cats’ Rachel Kearns are familiar with sharing a sporting field, but are usually on the same team. The Gaelic Football and soccer teammates back in Ireland have played both together for the past nine years, but they played against each other for the first time on Friday night on the other side of the globe. The pair had a collision in the second quarter with concerns for Rowe’s right hand but she returned, cleared of injury, in the third.
