“The materials we used, like bricks, give it a softer feel and with a whitewash, it brings the house into a coastal aesthetic,” Mr Chamberlain said.
A U-shaped window and other small but unique touches throughout the design, such as an outdoor shower, make it a little bit more irreverent.

“There’s more playfulness than a usual suburban house. There are nice little moments that, when you get there, make you realise, ‘yeah we’re on holidays’.”
Many Melburnians have moved to Mornington Peninsula during the pandemic, but Mr Robinson said this house has had a lot of interest from holidaymakers instead of those looking to live in the area full-time.
“Most of the interest has been holiday home buyers, and when I say holiday home buyers I mean to use the home on weekends.”
Before the pandemic many holiday home buyers had been those close to retirement, who could spend more time on the Mornington Peninsula and less time at the office. However, purchasers in the area are now younger since remote work became widespread.

“There’s been a real change in the way people use the area … there’s a much younger profile of people who have their own smaller home or apartment in town and live for three or four days a week in Portsea.”
It’s not the only mid-century style home listed in the Mornington Peninsula. Another, at 12 Point King Road, Portsea has hit the market with an asking price between $8.5 million and $9 million.
It is next door to one of the most expensive homes on the peninsula, Ilyuka, which sold for $26 million in 2011.
Hodges Real Estate Brighton’s Andrew Boyce said it was the first time the property, also used as a holiday home, had come up for sale in 35 years.

Built in the 1950s, it is one of the rare mid-century beachside homes that still survives.
“Melburnians love the mid-century style,” Mr Boyce said. “It only went online [on Thursday] and I already have half a dozen appointments for people to see through the home on the weekend.”
As well as being unique, it has amazing views of the ocean overlooking Point King Beach.
