Developers have revealed the first major art installation for the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane project, an entertainment and tourism precinct set to progressively open from 2023.
The eight-metre tall, eight-tonne bronze oblong will stand at the precinct’s George Street entrance, at the top of Mary Street, not far from the heritage-listed row of terrace houses known as The Mansions.
Brisbane artist Lindy Lee’s sculpture Being Swallowed by the Milky Way is set to light up the George Street Atrium at Queen’s Wharf Brisbane.
The art installation, titled Being Swallowed by the Milky Way, will be perforated with thousands of small holes to allow light to shine through in the vein of a galaxy. It will be especially visible at night.
World-renowned artist Lindy Lee left Brisbane in the 1970s because she felt the city lacked “cultural inspiration”. On Monday, she said it was “moving” to see her artwork featured in a major project in her home town.
“I left over 40 years ago because at that time Brisbane didn’t have a lot in terms of art and culture,” Lee said.

“I feel I have come full circle, returning as an established artist to a dynamic, culturally advanced city.”
Lee was the first artist named under The Star Entertainment Group’s multimillion-dollar art commissioning program for the development, with more artists expected to be revealed in the coming months.
Brisbane arts identity Philip Bacon AO, who headed the selection panel for the program, said the acquisition of a piece by Ms Lee was a coup for the city.
