“This level would close the Charles Drew Bridge on the Warrego Highway,” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services warned.
“Residents with properties in low-lying areas should warn their neighbours, secure their belongings and prepare to move to higher ground immediately.”
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the government was keeping a “very keen eye” on what was happening in the Western Downs town.
Ms Palaszczuk said some “small releases” from Wivenhoe Dam were not expected to have an impact on river levels.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Jonathan How said south-east Queenslanders could expect more of the same on Tuesday morning, with the worst of it expected to pass by the afternoon.
“Over the next 24 hours we’ll see a low-pressure system develop off the south-east Queensland coast and this will cause increased wind as well as hazardous surf conditions, so we have issued a hazardous surf warning for Gold Coast waters,” he said on Monday.

“Thankfully, though, we expect the rain to peak tonight [Monday] and into Tuesday, but then by Tuesday afternoon and evening, we’ll see the rain really decrease back into showers.
“Of course, the flooding will likely continue for the next few days.”

Mr How said up to 100 millimetres had fallen in parts of North Stradbroke Island, 50 millimetres on the Gold Coast and between 20 and 40 millimetres in the Brisbane metropolitan area.
“But these numbers are rapidly rising through [Monday] afternoon,” he said.
Falls of more than 200 millimetres over a six-hour period were possible, which Mr How said would likely produce more “life-threatening flash flooding” in the region.
The effect Queensland’s big wet was having on residents was not just physical.
“For weeks, people have been cleaning up, arranging repairs, dealing with multiple agencies, all while balancing returning to ‘normal’ life and expectations,” Lifeline Queensland general manager Luke Lindsay said.
“They are exhausted, because it is exhausting.”
