Sydney Airport chaos continues with 82,000 set to travel before Easter

Airport workers are now exempt from rules requiring self-isolation for seven days if they are a household contact of a COVID-19 patient.

However, they must travel directly to and from work and wear a mask in the workplace at all times.

They must also undergo rapid antigen testing across the seven days.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Sydney Airport chief executive Geoff Culbert said staffing issues had been worsened as a result of the “incredibly tight labour market”.

“The roles that are being recruited are skilled, specialist roles and we won’t compromise on safety and security,” he said.

“As more staff join in the weeks and months ahead, we expect some of the security challenges to ease, but rebuilding the workforce will take time.

“The workforce shortages we are facing are cutting across almost every sector in Australia and, in the aviation industry, we’ve seen similar scenes play out with airports and airlines globally.”

Similar scenes are being experienced across Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne airports as a result of the Easter weekend rush.

More than 56,000 customers are expected to walk through the doors of Brisbane Airport on Thursday, while Melbourne Airport is braced for more than 380,000 people over the Easter long weekend.
