A six-year-old boy is dead and a family and community traumatised after a fatal house fire in Brisbane’s inner north on Easter Monday.

Neighbours say the child’s mother and father escaped the flames at the house in Clayfield, along with the boy’s younger sibling, before the reality of the blaze’s intensity hit.

“Completely devastating, heartbreaking,” an emotional neighbour, who identified herself as Jen and also knew the family from the nearby primary school, told Nine News.

“It was an awful thing to witness and us as a community are just in shock.

“We’re devastated. It’s a heartbreaking experience for everybody involved.”

She said she had heard the mother screaming that she could not get back into the two-story timber home to save her boy, reportedly named Max.

A relative told reporters the boy had been looking forward to his seventh birthday in a fortnight.

His parents had remained on scene as firefighters tried to contain the fire. Neighbours sought to comfort his sibling with toys.
