Gould was quizzed about his hands-on approach at Penrith when Anthony Griffin was in charge before Griffin was speared, but refused to answer.
He did say the Dogs had a long way to go on the field, but the win over the Roosters was great reward for the coach and players.
Fans had some fun with Phil Gould on social media after the weekend win.
“They didn’t great play great football on the weekend, but there was a resilience and a togetherness about them that whatever happened they were going to find a way to get the result, and they did. It was all the players,” Gould said.
“It was a tremendous performance and a gutsy performance. Their football has a long way to go, our club has a long way to go before we are where we want to be, but it was nice to see those players get a result on the weekend.”

Barrett is off contract at the end of 2023, but welcomed Gould’s hands-on approach last week, and said at the time it was not the first time. Gould himself quipped at the time he enjoyed walking on to the field in a pair of jeans and blowing the whistle.
Barrett made it clear he was happy for Gould’s impromptu outing, but “the boys still know who the coach is”.
“Gus doesn’t interfere with any tactical things. He will give an opinion and give an opinion to me. That’s his job,” Barrett said last week.
An elated Barrett doubled down about Gould’s input after the weekend win and said he had “not been too proud to ask for help” from a mastermind like his football manager.
“Why wouldn’t I get the big fella down there to give us a rev-up if we think we need it,” Barrett said.
“It’s a long year, and after six losses, to keep everyone motivated can become like Groundhog Day. I’ll use the waterboy if I think he can help.”
