Council crackdown on illegal dumping in city’s east

The council requires contractors to pick up illegally dumped rubbish within two business days and
contractor Cleanaway had basically met that target, with an average completion time of 2.03 days. The average time for a mattress to be collected was 4.63 days.

Since January 2019, the council has launched 1590 investigations into littering and waste; 71 were in the Potts Point area, and 26 of those resulted in fines.

A City of Sydney spokesperson told the Herald: “We are in the process of finalising the results of the investigation and will provide an update as soon as possible.”

Last month the council unanimously passed a motion noting the City experienced a “significant strain on staff resources” due to COVID-19 related absences, as had contractors, which affected waste collection.

Significant disruptions to waste services were experienced in September and October, as well as in January and February, but delays were expected to improve as COVID-related absences decreased.

A spokesperson for the NSW EPA encouraged residents to report any illegal dumping to the EPA or the relevant local council.

“Most people do the right thing and book in a waste pick-up service with their council or consider selling items in good condition through online forums,” they said. “Leaving waste on the kerbside without contacting your council could be illegal dumping and cost thousands of dollars in fines.”
