Council papers from June 2020 state that the replacement of the street furniture would be finished by January this year. However, a council spokesperson said the January 2022 completion date had been identified before the pandemic.

So far, about 100 of the 340 new bus shelters have been erected, mostly outside the CBD in suburbs such as Alexandria, Waterloo, Zetland, Rosebery, Erskineville and Potts Point.
The council said work on installing new bus shelters in the CBD was scheduled to begin in May, and the following month on York Street – a busy thoroughfare for buses. “Weather permitting, most of the new bus shelters should be in place by July,” it said.
City of Sydney Labor councillor Linda Scott said it was unacceptable that residents, workers and businesses were without bus shelters, bins and benches for months on end.
“The installation of new street furniture was supposed to be completed in January this year but time and time again our communities are left disappointed by delays,” she said. “This could have been avoided. City residents are unnecessarily having to stand in the rain to catch a bus.”
Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore said council staff and contractors were making every effort to minimise disruption. “Unfortunately the pandemic, prolonged periods of rain and global supply chain disruptions have delayed the process of replacing the City’s street furniture,” she said.
