Kyle Chalmers (52.10s) will also contest the butterfly final, having earned an exemption for his favoured 100m freestyle event.

Meanwhile, Shayna Jack is back at Australian trials for the first time since serving a two-year drugs ban in the women’s 100m freestyle.

Jack missed the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive to a banned substance but looked the goods with a 53.27, putting her equal second fastest for the final.

18-year-old Mollie O’Callaghan was the fastest qualifier in a time of 52.83.

Meanwhile, Elijah Winnington (3:46.83) has qualified fastest for Wednesday night’s 400m freestyle final ahead of Sam Short (3:47.13) and Mack Horton (3:48.92).

Winnington was the gold medal favourite heading into the Tokyo Olympics but couldn’t deliver on the biggest stage, finishing a disappointing seventh in a race where fellow Australian Jack McLoughlin claimed a silver medal.

It took Winnington months to get over his failure in Tokyo but he is back in the pool with redemption on his mind.

McLoughlin has taken some time away from the sport, leaving two spots up for grabs for the World Championships and three for the Commonwealth Games.

Horton, a gold medallist in the 400m freestyle in Rio, missed selection for Tokyo in individual events.
