Why a ‘skeleton’ filly is forging Camilleri’s path to another Oaks after Winx

John Camilleri didn’t know what he had bred until the Queensland Oaks and, even then, he could barely have had a clue what was about to happen.

Does lightning strike twice? Racing has a funny way of repeating itself sometimes.

It’s fanciful to think Camilleri’s latest Queensland Oaks contender will even be a fraction as good as Winx, who won the race in 2015, her first group 1 before adding another 24 by the end of her career.

However, the race was a seminal moment in her progression, and that of trainer Chris Waller.

This time, Camilleri has retained another filly, Dynasties, to race under his Fairway Thoroughbreds banner.

And after chalking up her first stakes win in the Gold Coast Bracelet last start, Dynasties will use a restricted race at Rosehill on Saturday as a crucial springboard into the Queensland Oaks in a fortnight.

Whereas Camilleri offered Winx for sale at the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions extravaganza, knocked down for $230,000 to Peter Tighe’s Magic Bloodstock, there was never any thought of sending Dynasties to market.

“I like her a lot,” Camilleri said. “She was a beautiful yearling, with a lovely, scopey, gorgeous head, but she was a little bit backward to send to a sale and we knew she would develop. There was no point getting caned in the sales ring when you could see what she would be if given time.

“She’s been given time by the stable now and she’s a gorgeous filly.”
