COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns in areas with lower vaccination rates remain an option, but only as a “last resort”, Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles says.
As the state progresses towards the 80 per cent vaccination target and the border opening on December 17, Mr Miles said the state government remained concerned about lower levels of vaccination rates in certain areas.

However, he said the state government was “very confident” about hitting the 80 per cent target across Queensland – largely driven by Brisbane’s higher vaccination rate.
“We will hit that average across the state,” he said. “We are worried there will be locations that will be below that number.
“There will be some below that number and there could be some well below that number, and that’s why this effort is so important.
“We have to get as many parts of the state as close to that target as we possibly can.”
Mr Miles said having pockets with low vaccination rates increased the risk of a large outbreak.
“So restrictions remain an option where they are necessary [but] they will be a last resort.
